Ich wil diß halbe mich - Martin Opitz

Martin Opitz

Weit vber alle Lufft vnd Himmel fliegen kan

I WILL THIS HALF OF ME ...

I will this half of me, my part of slightest moment,
That bears the name of body, courageously and steadfast
As Alcmene's son consign to flaming foment,
Cremating thus my burden, this argile and dead cast,

To soar to Heaven; my soul rises in resplendence
Towards a higher estate. This grip of blood, this rind
Is rushing to change out, into that transcendence
Beyond the grasp of flesh and mortal mind.

My light, inflame me with your eyes' enkindling lust,
Igniting draw my freedom from this skin, this fust
Of gloomy flesh, this carcer pulsed with waste and dread,

So, frailty discarded, free, released and leaven,
I can fly far above the air, the vault of Heaven,
To contemplate that Beauty: your beauty's fountainhead.
